This is a little essay about the word 'ié ié ié' (or iê-iê-iê) which was coined circa 1965, after the song 'She loves you' (yeah, yeah, yeah) to identify a certain kind of music that used to be called 'rock'n'roll' up to that moment. The fact is that the translators at United Artists didn't know how to translate 'A hard day's night' into Portuguese. That was title of The Beatles's very first film. I don't know who... but someone came up with this not very bright idea of 'translating' it as 'The kings of yeah, yeah, yeah'. It is silly but the name stuck! From then on, whenever one referred to 'rock' as a counterpart to Brazilian music - one would say 'ié ié ié'... 'Brazilian music' (MPB) meant the music inspired by Brazilian rhythms like samba and it could not have any electrical instruments in it, especially the electric guitar which was identified as the 'enemy'. The music called 'ié-ié-ié' was usually translated from English - even if it was written originally in Portuguese it always had electric guitar as accompaniment and dealt with youth issues like 'big cars', the latest fashion or teeny-bopper romance. 'Brazilian music' was considered 'in' and 'ié ié ié' was considered alienated and americanized. Well, I think that's it in a nut-shell.
